Modern Gallantry

These days, it’s hard for anyone to show acts of gallantry without being vilified in the media. However, there are definitely a few ways that people have shown a huge amount of gallantry and yet still been praised. The problem is that gallantry is a very subjective term, and so everyone has different opinions on it. One thing to consider is that gallantry doesn’t have to be about active acts of courage, it can be much more passive. It also doesn’t have to be aggressive, and in fact modern society doesn’t really reward too many acts of gallantry that harm other people. For example, modern war heroes are generally those who save lots of people through acts of risking their lives, rather than by killing them. A few hundred years ago, however, it was completely the opposite. There were no prizes for saving lives, only for ending them.

Interestingly enough, people are often described as courageous through very strange ways these days. For example, a lawyer who stands up against precedence and tries to take a stand against something that is an injustice. He would be risking his whole career in the hope of making a lasting difference, and that is definitely gallantry. This kind of gallantry is what we’re all going to have to get used to, because long gone are the days when there were huge battles for people to show how courageous they are. Now people have to do something extremely special and extraordinary to show themselves to be courageous.
