How Gallantry Has Changed

Gallantry always used to be a word that would describe courageous acts for a higher cause. It was a popular term to describe soldiers who were extremely brave in battle, or to describe the actions of a King who was attempting to make his country a better place. However, it’s now not got the same sort of meaning, and it appears to have almost become a synonym for courage, which is not quite the same thing. Courage merely describes being brave or showing strength against something, it doesn’t take into account the reason for the braveness, which is what the word gallantry used to do. Gallantry used to be all about acts of huge importance in the history of the world, but modern authors have changed it into something weaker and without as much power in terms of history.

Also, it could be said that modern society doesn’t reward people for large acts of courage such as gallantry in the same way as they were hundreds of years ago. People who did acts of gallantry were rewarded with large amounts of money and a great deal of status, but now those people are almost forgotten. The only people who come close are soldiers who go to war, but even they are now left behind by society because we prefer to ignore the horrible realities of war. Older societies were much more willing to accept and embrace war and so courageous deeds were heavily rewarded.
